The Women’s Afghan Project
In the aftermath of 9/11 as all of us voiced our horror I listened to many people I knew in my community, work, and even people on the news, ramble about retaliation. One of the comments I listened stuck with me. This person suggested In anger, that we should blow up the Afghanistan from the map, “the innocent women have it so bad that they probably would be better off…” he rambled when I mentioned the innocent people like women and children.
Last year, I went to an event here in Austin called The Afghan Women’s Project by Peggy Kelsey. I was curious about it, and so decided to check it out as that horrible comment had nagged me for many years. I assumed that it would be a photo exhibit, but it was so much more…
Each picture was paired up with a story. Then came the slide show as Peggy commented live. I gazed at read every single picture, read each story as my neighbors’ comments came back to my ears.. I shame, just plain shame combined with the excitement that come to learn something new. I found so much humanity through these women’s eyes…so much life in their stories, and wisdom on their quotes…how wrong were we to judge a whole nation for the sins of few.
I sat down and listened to the presentation, finding so many similarities, even identifying with their feelings. I realized that we belonged to the same Nation…we were all women.
I finally had the opportunity to interview Peggy about The Women’s Afghan Project. Listen to what she has to say…it will enrich your thoughts and heart.
